The place
Goodwood House is a Grade I listed country house, set within a 4900 hectare estate and is the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Richmond. Historically it was well-known as a sporting estate and is now known as the home of British motor racing. Goodwood is now the site of a number of internationally renowned motoring events, most notably The Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival, a festival of vintage cars. The Goodwood Art Foundation is a new not-for-profit public art gallery and sculpture park set within 28 acres of the grounds, which opened in May 2025.
The brief
A site wide masterplan to consider new access, car parking and other key infrastructure, an accessible woodland walk approach to the refurbished gallery, hard landscaping treatment to the gallery and new café building by Studio Downie, woodland access and management, as well as proposals to enhance biodiversity of flora and fauna across the site.
The design
We worked closely with the existing landscape and all design proposals prioritised maximising biodiversity across the site. The majority of planting is indigenous. We proposed the idea of twenty-four seasonal moments to throw new light on both landscape and artworks as the year progresses, giving visitors a different landscape experience each time they visit. These seasonal moments include graphic bulb plantings of snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells, cherry blossom, foxgloves and vibrant autumn colour. We worked closely with the curator, Ann Gallagher, on the siting of artworks for the inaugural exhibition, which was headlined by Rachel Whiteread and included works by Rose Wylie, Lubna Chowdhary, Veronica Ryan, Amie Siegel, Susan Philipzs and Isamu Noguchi. Planting took place in spring 2025.
