The place

Old Paradise Gardens is a small public park managed by Lambeth Council on Lambeth High Street. Just opposite the Garden Museum, it has been the focus of the museum’s community outreach and education strategy and integral to their vision of a connected network of greened streets, with the museum at the centre.

The brief

We were asked to produce a feasibility study and design for a small community garden within the curtilage of the park, that would allow local residents and children the opportunity to grow edible and medicinal plants and herbs. All structures had to be removable and the budget for the space was limited, as funds were to be raised from a number of local donors with the intention of a speedy construction and installation process.

The design

Spatially, the garden reflects the organic shape of a seed pod. A perimeter fence of handwoven hazel describes the pod, while circular raised beds within the garden, also contained with hazel, represent seeds. Intentionally light touch and designed with natural materials, the garden provides a restful and engaging space for local residents and museum visitors alike. Individual beds have been adopted by local families for the growing of edibles, herbs and cut-flowers.
Maintained by community gardener, Selina Ozanne, the garden references old apothecary gardens, with the soft periphery landscaping featuring herbaceous plants formerly grown for their medicinal uses, including lungwort, sweet cicely and geranium. The garden features bespoke seating, a wildlife pond, sensory and dye plantings, and a weathered steel insect hotel.
