Battersea Park Winter Garden

04.03.11

The new Winter Garden in Battersea Park was opened on Thursday March 3rd, by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.

In 2003 we were commissioned to redesign a neglected and decaying area of the park, which was not eligible for Heritage Lottery funding. Since the original commission a great many people have given of their time and expertise to help raise the required funds to implement the concept scheme, which has necessitated several stages, as funds gradually became available. It has involved the local community in the restoration and enhancement of a green open space which plays an important part in their lives and is available to everyone. The aim was to provide the park with a place that has its high point during the lowest point in the season, and celebrates winter with plants that provide vibrant colour from leaf fall to bud burst. It is also a living memorial to Elaine Hodges, who did so much to improve the park in her lifetime.
