Flowers for Heidi

04.08.11

Heidi's funeral was on Tuesday, and her family asked us to do the flowers, both for the church and for her coffin.
Dan and I picked flowers all day on Sunday and drove back to London with a car full of containers crammed with wildflowers, flowers from the garden and foliage from the hedgerows.

On Monday afternoon we downed tools in the studio, cracked open a  bottle of champagne, divided up a blackcurrant tart, and started to arrange the flowers. Heidi loved wildflower meadows and so we created a miniature one to cover the coffin, using scabious, harebells, ladies' bedstraw, Bishop's weed, wild oregano and knapweed.

We made other wild looking arrangements for the church from Bishop's Weed, poppies, cornflowers, flax, marigolds and lavender.

The service was beautiful. Heidi's 18 year old daughter Tallulah gave a eulogy of staggering maturity, poise and compassion. Truly her mother's daughter.

This song by Ben Harper, had been chosen by Heidi, to be sung by a friend of hers. It gave us all pause to consider the positive effect of Heidi's presence in our lives, and ignited a determination to ensure that those qualities that we loved best about her, are carried forward into the future by us all.

Waiting on an Angel by Ben Harper

Waiting on an angel
One to carry me home
Hope you come to see me soon
Cause I don't want to go alone
I don't want to go alone

Now angel won't you come by me
Angel hear my plea
Take my hand, lift me up
So that I can fly with thee
So that I can fly with thee

And I'm waiting on an angel
And I know it won't be long
To find myself a resting place
In my angel's arms
In my angel's arms

So speak kind to a stranger
Cause you'll never know
It just might be an angel come
Knockin' at your door
Knockin' at your door

And I'm waiting on an angel
And I know it won't be long
To find myself a resting place
In my angel's arms
In my angel's arms

Waiting on an angel
One to carry me home
Hope you come and see me soon
Cause I don't want to go alone
I don't want to go alone
Don't want to go
I don't want to go alone
