First stirrings

11.02.11

Although the goldfish are still hiding at the bottom of the pond, the first flowers are appearing in the studio garden. Hellebores from Ashwood Nurseries in shades of white, yellow and green with dark nectaries and speckling combine beautifully with the brown winter foliage of Hakonechloa macra 'Allgold'. The reflective palmate foliage of the green-flowered Helleborus foetidus are complemented by the evergreen ferns.

The tall, elegant flowers of snowdrop Galanthus 'Magnet' have taken a beating in the recent wind and rain, but a few are still braving it out.

Meanwhile the evergreens that have kept us going through the winter - Euphorbia 'Roundway Titan' (above) and Acanthus 'Hollard's Gold' (below) - are already being joined by the emerging foliage of narcissus, iris and peonies.

One of the highlights of the garden at the moment are the tiny flowers of the two Daphne bholua - 'Alba' (below) and 'Darjeeling'  - which fill corners of the garden with their talcy, old lady scent.

In pots by the front door Iris histrioides 'George' brings a touch of elegance with his royal purple blooms.
